What does Comprehensive Coverage mean?

Also referred to as "Other than Collision Coverage" or just “Comp. Coverage“. It will provide you with coverage for perils such as Fire, Hail, Wind, Glass, Theft, Animal Damage & Vandalism minus your chosen deductible.

What does it cover?

Common Comprehensive claim examples include colliding with an animal, a rock flying up and cracking a windshield, damage from a hail storm, a stolen vehicle that is wrecked/never found, & a tree falling on a vehicle. Make sure no to confuse Comp. Coverage with Collision Coverage.

Is Comprehensive Coverage required?

No States require vehicle owners to carry Comp. Coverage, however, if you have a loan on your vehicle the lien holder will require you to carry this coverage.

What is a deductible?

The deductible that you select will be the amount of the claim you will be responsible for. Each company has different deductible amounts you can select from ($100, $250, $500, $1000). Some companies give the option of a separate glass deductible ($50) or full glass replacement, make sure to ask. If you have a lien holder verify what the max deductible amount they allow as some lien holders will not allow over a $500 deductible.

Example: Hail storm does $1500 worth of damage to the covered vehicle which has a $500 deductible. The payout will be $1500 less the $500 deductible equaling $1000.

Should I carry Comprehensive Coverage?

Here are a few things to think about if you are trying to decide on carrying Comp. Coverage:

  • Is the vehicle a high value vehicle?

  • Can you afford to pay $1,000+ if something happens?

  • Is your area high risk for severe storms, tornadoes, or hurricanes?

  • Is there a lot of car theft in your area?

  • Do I have a lien holder?
