Is Pet Insurance Worth It in Tennessee? A Local Agent's Guide

An emergency vet visit, a swallowed sock or a cancer diagnosis can turn into a bill of several thousand dollars, often with little warning. Pet insurance is designed to keep a bill like that from becoming a hard choice. Here's how it works, what it covers, and how to decide whether it makes sense for your dog or cat in Tennessee.

How pet insurance works

Pet insurance works differently from health insurance for people. In most cases you pay the veterinarian, submit a claim, and get reimbursed for covered costs after your deductible. Most plans let you choose your deductible and reimbursement level, which is how you control the monthly price.

The two coverage options we offer

At Hooper Insurance, we offer pet health insurance through Safeco, with two main options:

  • Accident & Illness: Covers accidental injuries, illnesses like cancer or influenza, and emergencies like swallowing a foreign object.

  • Accident, Illness & Wellness: Everything above, plus preventive care and routine exams.

You can see both options on our pet insurance page.

What pet insurance usually doesn't cover

  • Pre-existing conditions. Problems your pet had before coverage started are typically excluded.

  • Waiting periods. Most policies have a short waiting period before illness coverage begins, so it pays to enroll while your pet is healthy.

  • Routine care on accident-only or accident-and-illness plans. Checkups and vaccines are only covered on wellness plans.

Always read the exact exclusions in your policy. We're happy to walk through them with you.

When pet insurance is worth it

Pet insurance tends to make the most sense if:

  • Your pet is young and healthy, so more future conditions will be covered.

  • Your dog or cat is a breed known for costly health issues.

  • A sudden vet bill of several thousand dollars would strain your budget.

It may be less valuable for an older pet with several pre-existing conditions, or if you'd rather set aside your own emergency fund.

Pet insurance vs. your homeowners policy

These two cover very different things. Pet insurance pays for your pet's vet bills. Your homeowners policy's liability coverage is what responds if your dog injures someone else, and some insurance companies limit or exclude certain breeds.
